With the right combination of active and passive microwave models, sophisticated simulation technologies, schematic/layout design synchronization, EM verification, statistical analysis, design rule checking (DRC), package and DUT Board modeling, all on a common EDA platform, MMIC Designer Premier is the most complete front-to-back MMIC solution available today.

Advanced Model Composer

Advanced Model Composer enables the creation of user-defined multi-dimensional, parameterized models for passive components. The unique and patented modeling method is EM-based, providing EM accuracy and generality, at circuit simulation speed. User-defined model types may include spiral inductors and arbitrary shaped matching components, as well as typical interconnect elements such as opens, stubs, bends, and tees on custom substrates. The generated models are fully compatible with the ADS Design Kit structure and, in addition to the electrical model, include both schematic and layout representations. Components can be built into libraries, logical groupings, or sets of components, enabling the designer to organize them in a manner that fits both the application and design process.

Leveraging Multiple Simulation Technologies

MMIC Designer provides a complete spectrum of simulation technologies that range from linear (Scattering parameters) and non-linear (Harmonic Balance) simulation to electromagnetic field simulation all in one integrated environment. Together, these technologies empower designers with the ability to fully characterize, and optimize designs under real-world physical conditions.

Below is a list of new, key and unique technologies that set ADS MMIC solutions apart from the competition:

DesignGuides

Passive Circuit DesignGuide provides synthesis and analysis of all the commonly used microstrip components familiar to microwave designers, such as branch-line couplers, Wilkinson dividers, coupled line filters, quarter-wave matching networks and lumped-element matching networks. It allows for the quick and easy design, simulation and optimization of most passive circuit components. Microwave circuits that previously took significant design time are now synthesized in seconds.

The DesignGuide contains SmartComponents, which includes couplers, filters, power dividers, matching networks and reactive elements. It also contains automated assistants for the design, simulation, optimization, and performance analysis of passive microstrip structures. The automation assistant includes design and simulation assistants, optimization assistant and data display of specifications

Linear Simulator

Linear simulation is the most frequently required analysis for the design of LNA's, filters, and passive microstrip structures, and matching networks. Calculated gain and noise figure circles help the designer predict amplifier performance, while S-, Z-, Y-, and H-parameters provide accurate subcircuit characterization. For circuits with nonlinear devices, the DC bias point is calculated so that a small-signal analysis can be performed.

Included with the ADS Linear simulator is a comprehensive list of microwave model libraries covering schematic and layout representations to define circuit prototypes at the component level. Models for microstrip, stripline, coplanar waveguides and other transmission line elements are all part of the available libraries.

Harmonic Balance Simulator

Nonlinear simulation using the improved Harmonic Balance technique extends the capabilities of linear simulation to include nonlinear effects such as, compression in amplifiers, mixer noise, and non-linear amplifier noise. Recent enhancements to Agilent's Harmonic Balance simulator vastly improve both speed and convergence.

Statistical Design

Statistical Design is one of the most useful extensions to the MMIC design environment. With yield analysis and discrete value optimization, designers can now easily evaluate the sensitivity of a design to component tolerances. Optimization technologies include discrete, gradient, random, genetic, and EM-based enable the rapid development of designs with optimal performance. Yield analysis characterizes the manufacturing yield of the design, while yield optimization automatically adjusts parameter values to maximize production yield.

Implementing the Physical Design

High-Frequency Based Layout Editor

MMIC Designer layout is the cornerstone of a physical design environment for complex MMIC circuits. Each component can have a layout representation in addition to a schematic representation and an electrical model. The layout editor is fully integrated in the design environment and supports powerful design tools such as Momentum electromagnetic analysis, parameterized model generation, and design verification.

Design Synchronization

Through design synchronization, a one-to-one correspondence is maintained between the layout and the schematic. Modifications to the layout are automatically reflected in the schematic. This powerful capability allows designers to create a layout directly from the schematic. Circuit simulations are hierarchically tied to both the schematic and the physical layout to provide fast, accurate analysis in all phases of the design process. When the layout is finished, designs can be quickly transferred to manufacturing using industry standard file formats.

EM Design & Verification

Electromagnetic (EM) field simulation of passive components and circuits adds accuracy, enabling engineers to include physical parasitic effects in evaluation of their designs. Momentum (E8921A) analyzes the high-frequency effects displayed by arbitrary planar circuits embedded in multi-layer substrates. Simulation results are readily available to circuit simulators for inclusion in the analysis of larger circuits and systems.

Traditionally, EM field simulators have been used for design verification near the end of the design phase. With Momentum EM optimization (E8925A), designers can now automate design refinement at the physical design level. After the engineer specifies performance goals, the design parameters are optimized before the final design is generated.

E8922A Momentum Visualization allows users to view and animate flow in conductors and slots. Antenna designers will find the abilities to easily calculate and display antenna parameters, and generate 3D and 2D far-field antenna plots extremely useful.

Design Rule Checker (DRC)

The Design Rule Checker helps ensure that a design layout conforms to the physical constraints required for high yield production. These constraints can be a requirement of the design itself, such as noise reduction, or a requirement of the process used to produce the design.

Users can run a quick check to ensure conformance to basic design requirements, such as minimum width and spacing, or run a custom check using prewritten rules to ensure that a design meets manufacturing specifications. In either case, all or part of the design can be checked.

Advanced Design System Fundamentals

This is a medium-paced three-day detailed introduction to the application of Advanced Design System (ADS) for communication systems and circuit designs.

This course instructs designers on schematic capture, the proper application of a wide variety of simulators, and the display and manipulation of results.

After a brief study of ADS basic operation, students design and test amplifier and filter circuits that are then placed in a down-converting receiver system for final simulation. Real-world examples are used at all times so that designers can return to their jobs ready to apply ADS effectively to their design challenges.
